Which one should you choose?
Two toy breeds with different coat philosophies and temperaments. The Pomeranian is alert and vocal, quick to bark at new stimuli, while the Shih Tzu is generally calmer and more consistently mellow, bred purely as a companion lapdog rather than a watchful spitz-type.
Grooming runs heavy for both, but for different reasons: the Pomeranian's coat sheds substantially and needs regular brushing to manage the volume, while the Shih Tzu's long, flowing coat sheds far less but mats easily without near-daily attention or a shorter maintenance trim. Both suit apartment living given their compact size, and both can be delicate around very young children.
Lean Shih Tzu if a calmer, quieter lapdog with lower shedding is the priority, and you're prepared for intensive coat upkeep. Lean Pomeranian if you'd rather have the chattier, fluffier spitz personality and don't mind the heavier shed.
