Which one should you choose?

Two of the smallest popular breeds, and both carry outsized personalities that can catch new owners off guard — feisty, alert, and quick to bark at anything unfamiliar. Where they diverge most is coat: the Yorkie's silky, continuously growing coat needs regular brushing and trims to stay manageable, while the Chihuahua's is essentially maintenance-free. Both breeds tend to be better suited to homes without very young children, since their small size makes rough handling a real injury risk, and both do best when their owner commits to consistent, patient socialization. Exercise needs stay light for either, making apartment living realistic. Training takes persistence with both breeds, which can be strong-willed despite their size. The Yorkie edges toward a slightly bolder, more terrier-like confidence, while the Chihuahua's loyalty usually settles hardest on one person. Choose the Yorkie if you don't mind regular grooming for that signature coat; choose the Chihuahua for the simplest possible upkeep.

Whichever breed fits your life, consider adoption or breed-specific rescue first — many purebred and mixed-breed dogs and cats are already waiting for homes.
