Which one should you choose?

Size alone tells much of this story — the Havanese is a fraction of the Beagle's size, and that smaller frame carries through to nearly every other trait, including exercise needs, which drop considerably against the Beagle's fuller daily requirement. That makes the Havanese a far easier fit for apartment living or a less physically active household. Noise is the other major divider: the Beagle's baying instinct puts it among the loudest breeds around, while the Havanese stays comparatively moderate. Grooming runs opposite, though — the Havanese's long, silky coat needs regular brushing to avoid matting, while a Beagle's short coat gets by on barely any attention at all. Longevity leans Havanese too, with a typical run alongside its family that outpaces what most Beagles manage. Both breeds score well with kids. Someone wanting a longer-lived, quieter, more portable companion suited to close quarters should choose the Havanese; someone with outdoor space, tolerance for baying, and a preference for a low-grooming coat is better matched with the Beagle.

Whichever breed fits your life, consider adoption or breed-specific rescue first — many purebred and mixed-breed dogs and cats are already waiting for homes.
