Which one should you choose?

The size and energy gap here is significant — the Standard Poodle is a large, athletic breed that wants genuine daily exercise and mental engagement, originally bred as a serious retrieving dog, while the French Bulldog is a small, low-energy companion content with short, gentle outings, largely because its flat face rules out anything more strenuous. Trainability strongly favors the Poodle, widely regarded as one of the smartest and most responsive breeds around, while the Frenchie's affection doesn't always translate into eagerness during actual training sessions. Coat care runs heavy for the Poodle, whose dense curls barely shed but still need constant brushing and periodic clipping, compared with the Frenchie's wipe-and-go coat. Kids tend to do well with either breed. Size, top-tier trainability, and a low-shedding coat come with the grooming bills of the Standard Poodle; a much smaller, lower-energy lapdog companion comes with the French Bulldog.

Whichever breed fits your life, consider adoption or breed-specific rescue first — many purebred and mixed-breed dogs and cats are already waiting for homes.
